“Look at the ships, although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.” James 3
Beloved friends,
This
publication offers us a wonderful medium to begin our first communication with
you for the upcoming Fall Sunday School season. We have named it the S.S.
Rudder to convey what Religious Education ought to be for us as Greek Orthodox
Christians. The Rudder in the Orthodox Church, is the book of Canons or
Pedalion in Greek. The book of the Rudder then is the authority in regard
to the rules of the Church concerning matters of faith, morals, and discipline
in teaching our faith. Just as Christ is the rudder of the Church and
our lives by leading us to salvation, so too, our Sunday School Program directs
our young people in the teachings of the faith. We thank our new Sunday School
director, Mrs. Panayota Kevgas, for putting this fantastic new publication
together and hope it is informative for you as we share the good work and
direction of our Sunday School Religious Education Program.
Over the last few months, Panayota and I have been looking to improve our Sunday School curriculum for our youth. Panayota has taken the good work of her predecessor, Mrs. Sandie Liacouras and has proceeded forward with it in wonderful ways. As the weeks pass and our classes begin once again, please reach out to Panayota for any need, concern or assistance you can provide.
We look forward to working with each of you closely in making this coming school year and huge success. This success will be realized by us approaching our responsibilities as parents, teachers and Greek Orthodox Christians, with the same energy and boldness of the Apostle Paul and indeed all the teachers of the faith. Let us live our faith together, let us shine brightly as the stars in heaven and let us be vibrant in our Religious Education toward our young people.
Giving glory to
God always,
Rev. Father Christ Kontos
