Mission Statement

It is the intent of the Greek School of St. Luke to provide the opportunity for students of Greek and non-Greek descent to learn the language and culture of Greece, and to inform students of historical events and religious practices of the Greek culture.

St. Luke’s Afternoon Greek Language Course of Study

The Greek Language Course of Study has been planned and prepared for the afternoon Greek Language School of St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church in Broomall, Pennsylvania.  The primary aim of this course of study is to help make learning and teaching of the Greek language more interesting and enjoyable.

The School meets once a week for two hours on Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm. Classes usually begin the end of September and end the beginning of June.

Courses offered are kindergarten through seven with three stages; beginners, intermediate and advanced…currently we have ten teachers and one teaching assistant who meet on a regular basis for school and student related issues.

The series of books:” Learning Greek” whose many characteristics are the systematic exercises of simple, basic sentences, texts and a variety of language exercises and communication activities  will be used through out the year. Other teaching tools include the overhead projector, which provides a visual guide along with the textbook, and videos with accompanying class activities as well.

Most of the American born students come from Greek speaking families.  But we have a growing percentage of students from English speaking families.  Since for all students Greek is their second language, the methods applied by the school- especially beginners’ levels- are those of a second language,

The emphasis at the two beginners’ levels is placed on the alphabet and simple words, and on sentences applying everyday vocabulary.

When the students reach the intermediate levels, they are expected to be able to converse in Greek, read and express themselves in writing.  At the advanced levels, they are fully conversant in Greek, and writing is reinforced.  They learn more about the heritage and culture.

They teachers emphasize at all levels the importance of speaking Greek in class and seek to reinforce the use of the language at home.

The simple tests will be given to the students, once in November and once in May.  Conferences will be held twice a year.

Please refer to the year’s calendar for all school events.  During the year, we will also observe our ethnic and religious holidays and on certain holidays some students have to participate.  Please encourage them to do so with interest and enthusiasm.

During our closing ceremonies at the end of the school year, students who demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and in attendance will be acknowledged with an award certificate and/or a gift.

We would like to emphasize the importance of overall student participation and adherence to the school’s curriculum and guidelines. With the ongoing effort and support from our parents, we are sure to provide a successful year for all.

It is important to realize that our school meets only once a week, therefore the time spent with the students is very important and crucial in the success of your child. Please make every effort to bring your child every week, and in the case of a student being absent, take the time to contact your child’s teacher to bring him/her up to speed with the rest of the class.

With respect to our parents, we would like to encourage as much conversation and interaction with the Greek Language at home. This can be accomplished through dialogue, reading, videos, computer games, and also if you have access to Greek TV…we strongly recommend that any of the above will help maintain what the students learn in school.

Greek School will be a pleasant and successful academic experience for our students, with the teaching staff providing the academics, the PTO providing the extra curricula activities and the parents reinforcing everything at home. Remember our children will be as successful as we encourage them…so take the time put in the effort and we will do the rest!

Any questions or concerns that parents may have, please address them with your individual teacher and or the Administrative director.

Let’s all have a wonderful school year…

Thank you,

Toula Angelakos

Academic Director
